Backpacks for Success

For many students, the first day of school means a brand new backpack loaded with school supplies and a cool-looking outfit, right? Unfortunately, not all students are that lucky. Since 1996, The Foundation's Backpacks for Success Program has provided tens of thousands of backpacks full of supplies to children from income-eligible families to make sure that they, too, start the school year off on the right foot.

It's easy to get involved. Supply Drive donations of backpacks and school supplies are needed, so businesses, community organizations, and individuals are encouraged to organize Supply Drives. Download our Backpacks for Success Supply Drive Kit.  For more information, contact Susan Roberts Zettler at 407-320-0196 or susan_zettler@scps.us.

This year, backpacks filled with supplies will be distributed at every school in early August. Elementary, middle and high school students participating in the Free and Reduced meals program will receive notification from their schools that these supplies and books are available to them. Our goal is to provide 3,500 students with the supplies they need to start the school year.

After the distribution, the program provides backpacks and supplies throughout the academic year with the help of school guidance counselors who identify students in need.  Additional school supplies are made available through A Gift For Teaching - Seminole, the Foundation's Free Store for teachers.  Teachers from schools with the highest need students 'shop' for supplies once a month, ensuring that they have the supplies they need to do their work.

A strong start makes for an even stronger finish in classrooms throughout Seminole County thanks to programs like Backpacks for Success.
